Artist Statement

Like many artists, my lived experience and subconscious heavily influence my creativity. I am a Zoology Ph.D. and spent 15 years as a scientist studying bees. I embrace the inevitable voice of nature that sings through my art. In concert with this voice is a personal edge due to my regard for life and death, along with my fascination with creepies and crawlies. Broadly, I am a visual artist working in many mediums like painting and sculpting. I started sculpting four years ago and have since been pushing the limits of paper clay. The larger the sculpture, the more I lean on my experience as a scientist to engineer, troubleshoot, and creatively tackle the challenges the clay presents. The kiln dimensions are not a constraint as I maximize the size of my sculptures by firing them in pieces to go bigger and bolder. As a woman in science, it is necessary to be bold. Proudly, I approach my art with the same temperament.
